A pad built for a 45-minute crit doesn't need the same density as one built for a 4-hour endurance ride. Shorter, high-intensity efforts favor a thinner, more responsive pad; long days in the saddle favor more distributed cushioning and better moisture management, since irritation compounds over hours, not minutes.
Construction: Stitched vs. Bonded
How a pad is attached to the short matters as much as the pad itself. Bonded or laser-cut edges eliminate the raised stitched seams that can rub over long rides, especially where the pad meets the fabric at the leg openings.
Breathability and Treatment
Perimeter mesh or perforated zones help the pad dry between efforts, and antibacterial treatments matter more than most riders think for multi-day stage racing or back-to-back training days when a kit doesn't always get a full wash cycle in between.
Fit Isn't Unisex
Men's and women's anatomy differ enough that a genuinely anatomy-specific chamois, not just a resized men's pad, makes a real difference in pressure distribution and comfort.
